Position Title: Crystallography Instrument Scientist
Company: STFC
Location: East Hendred, UK
Job Description
The Crystallography group, at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source facility, specialises in the use of neutron diffraction methods to characterise the structure of crystalline materials. As an instrument scientist within the group, your responsibilities will be split between three core activities: i) instrument operations and development, ii) developing your personal science programme, and iii) supporting our international user community.
Responsibilities:
- This is a unique opportunity which will see you contributing to the development of powder diffraction capabilities at ISIS, including new instrumentation, sample environment facilities, and data analysis techniques.
- You will have the freedom to design and carry out your own research projects within this role and assist in growing the research programme of the Crystallography Group and the academic and industrial communities we support.
- A significant part of your role within the Crystallography group, will be to provide a high level of local expertise to support visiting research teams using the High-Resolution Powder Diffractometer (HRPD). HRPD is a world-leading diffraction instrument, and its unique capabilities allow the determination of high quality structural information contributing to a wide range of fundamental and applied science areas.
- You will also be able to interact and build relationships with research colleagues, as well as work collaboratively to support the team and the user community.
Requirements:
- Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a physical science or a related subject area, plus relevant postdoctoral experience.
- Solid scientific background in your relevant subject area.
- Experience performing neutron and/or X-ray diffraction, at a large-scale facilities beamline.
- Good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills in order to disseminate your scientific activity to a wider audience.
- Ability to work both collaboratively and individually, in order to support the ISIS user community.
About STFC
