Job Description

We’re looking for candidates who can demonstrate their design leadership within multi-disciplinary teams in an architecture, design office or international brand environment. Ideally, you’ll have previously been a principle designer or understand the elements of CDM. You’ll have strong communication skills and be able to build, lead and mentor cross-functional teams whilst managing of complex and/or large-scale concept design projects. You’ll have expert knowledge of Vectorworks or other CAD related software to complement your education and experience in design, construction, technical design or a related field. You’ll also have working knowledge of UK Building Regulations, Construction, Design and Management Regulations, Fire Safety, Environmental/Sustainability.

Responsibilities:

  • Identifying and communicating key responsibilities and practices to ensure the immediate team, promoting a successful attitude, confidence in leadership, and teamwork to achieve business results
  • Managing the translation of Design requirements to our local market. Leading communications on best practices across the business unit.
  • Providing resources needed for cross function teams to meet schedules. Reviewing schedules and workflow to anticipate needs. Prioritising work effectively and gains alignment with peers as needed to support design teams.
  • Challenges and inspires internal and external partners to achieve business and brand results. Conducts and ensures the completion of performance reviews. Ensuring continued partner development. Identifying necessary tools and training for teams.
  • Directing the external architects and design consultants and leads the design process for the UK market in close collaboration with other stakeholders.
  • Ensuring, along with co-leaders, that Starbucks UK executes effective store designs that meet functional, brand and business needs.
  • Collaborating with broader teams to meet internal project timelines, annual new store and renovation project counts and sales weeks goals.
  • Negotiating contracts and manage work efforts of the external architect and design consultants to ensure they deliver high quality design documents that comply with architectural and quality standards, building codes and health and safety regulations, on time and on budget.
  • Working with stakeholders to influence, help develop, and implementation of store solutions fit for UK market
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders to drive overall cost and timelines efficiencies
  • Developing annual operating plan, budget, and quarterly forecast updates. Monitoring and reporting on studio design performance, progress toward annual goals, and variances in store costs and store count forecasts relative to strategic plans for the business unit.

Requirements:

  • Acts as Principal Designer under CDM regulations ensuring Starbucks is compliant. Drives strategy and policy via external resources supporting Construction and H&S Functions. Directs internal and external designers on CDM standards and ensure appropriate level of knowledge and training is attained. Translates conceptual design to meet regulatory and operational requirements. Partners with Principal Contractor to ensure correct documentation including but not limited to H&S file and risk assessments are completed to required standards.
  • Ensures all store design is reflective of the requirements of the Building Regulations and Fire Safety Regulations to ensure a safe store environment for partners and customers. Knowledge of Bream/Leed accreditation and how this could influence Starbucks design.
  • Maintains professional capabilities and knowledge through either qualifications, external relationships or training to ensure they have a clear understanding of current and future legislation or industry best practice
