Position Title: Research Officer

Job Description
You will be based at Birmingham Airport and this will be considered to be your normal place of work (your base site). The Airport has two terminals – Main (T1) and Eurohub (T2) and surveys are carried out in both Arrivals and Departures of each of the Terminals. If you are required to work away from this site, you will be entitled to motor mileage and day subsistence. The Birmingham based team also cover the residual site of East Midlands Airport where you will also be required to work. As is normal with the IPS Interviewer positions, any contract awarded will include the requirement to
Responsibilities:
- Reporting findings through presentations, at ‘show and tell’ meetings, and through papers to a variety of audiences, both in the UK and internationally
- Contributing to quality assurance and production of statistical publications and research reports
- Using specialist statistical software such as SAS, SPSS, R or equivalent to support this research
- Helping customers (including government departments) make the best use of our statistics through answering their questions on standard outputs or conducting additional analysis
- Leading on the designing and development of questionnaires for social and economic surveys (suitable for paper, telephone, face-to-face and online self-completion) using
- qualitative research methods
- Production and publication of high-quality national statistics
- Management of less experienced researchers and building their capability
- Discrete pieces of analysis to provide context and understanding around statistical outputs
- Liaising closely with other staff across ONS to share knowledge and develop expertise
- Leading and conducting qualitative research (including focus groups, cognitive interviewing, pop-up research, usability testing and so on) with the public and analysis of
- findings
- Assisting with research to understand administrative datasets and how they can be used in the production of official statistics
- Development of new methods, production systems and dissemination to make sure we meet data users’ changing needs
- Survey design and management
Requirements:
- To be eligible to apply for this Government Social Research, Research Officer role you need to fulfil the criteria of one of the following three routes- Qualification route, Badged route and Experienced route.
