Position Title: Climate Science Communicator

Job Description:

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work as a Climate Science Communicator within the Knowledge Integration team in the Met Office Hadley Centre (MOHC). This post would see the successful candidate working on full-time secondment to Defra within their Climate Science team.

The main purpose of the role is to translate and communicate climate science for stakeholders, who are primarily science advisors and policymakers within government. This is a fundamental part of the delivery of the MOHC Climate Programme, which delivers world class policy-relevant scientific evidence to the UK Government.

The successful candidate would be involved in a range of high-profile work across Defra to maximise the visibility and impact of MOHC climate science for government customers.

This is a dynamic role requiring confident communication and a solid foundation in climate science and policy understanding.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone to gain a broad view of the climate science done across the Met Office Hadley Centre and to be at the forefront of delivering timely and tailored science advice to government stakeholders.

The role will allow the chance to build strong science communication skills for a variety of audiences using a range of techniques.

The unique opportunity to be embedded in a government science team will provide valuable experience of working at the science-policy interface and a deeper understanding of evolving UK government climate science priorities and evidence needs to support policy and decision making.

Responsibilities:

  • Experience of building good working relationships with a wide range of people including less technical/policy audience and working at the science/policy interface including an ability to understand and respond to user/customer needs
  • Ability to provide scientific/technical leadership or mentoring to junior staff
  • Extensive Post-doctoral research experience and proven track record of scientific research, or equivalent knowledge and experience gained from working in a climate science related sector
  • Evidence of excellent written and oral communication skills, including listening and the ability to analyse and distill complex information for a given target audience
  • Excellent organisational and prioritisation skills and ability to shape direction of work and work flexibility within a rapidly changing environment
  • Understanding of current issues and challenges of climate science communication
  • Understanding of the climate policy environment, and the related remits of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS)
