Position Title:LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE WORKER I

Job Description:

Under general supervision, is responsible for performing routine and general landscape, playground, and grounds maintenance; performs related duties as required.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares existing and new planting beds by cleaning out, cultivating, edging, spreading topsoil and mulch, and planting flowers and shrubbery in accordance with landscape plan;
  • Two (2) years of experience performing landscaping or grounds keeping work.
  • Operates straight trucks, hydraulic lift bed dump trucks, and trucks with single and double axle trailers attached; hauls supplies, equipment, plant material, topsoil, gravel, and other materials;
  • Assists in the construction, assembly, and/or maintenance of playgrounds and play areas.
  • Loads and unloads trucks with supplies, equipment, plant material, topsoil, gravel, and other materials required;
  • Possession of a valid Class A commercial driver’s license must be obtained by completion of the probationary period.
  • Minimum Qualifications
  • Sharpens brush hog blades; greases mowing decks; makes minor repairs to mowing tractors, 3-
  • point hitches, sway bars, and other landscaping and grounds keeping equipment;
  • Grades and levels surfaces to conform with existing grade or in accordance with site plan;
  • Prepares lawns and athletic fields for seeding and sodding as needed; aerates, seeds or lays new sod using hand tools; performs grading and mechanical seeding using aerating attachments on tractors;
  • Straightens, repairs, removes, and replaces damaged fence posts, top rails, and fence gates, augers holes, and sets new fence posts;
  • Performs daily checks of equipment fluid levels, belts, and general operating condition of equipment being used and completes daily check list for any trucks being used;
  • Removes tree stumps using stump grinder, front-end loader, and hand tools;
  • Starts, operates, and feeds plant materials into brush chipper;
  • Shovels snow from and/or applies salt or ice-melt to sidewalks, walkways, parking lots, and other surfaces to ensure safe passage by pedestrians on Columbus City Schools property; operates
  • vehicles with snow plows, spreaders, and other attachments as needed for snow and ice removal;
  • Mows and trims lawn areas and athletic field grass using push mowers, small riding mowers, power trimmers, and full-sized tractors with gang mower or brush hog decks attached; drives full-sized tractors on the street from job site to job site;
  • Cleans, adjusts, and sharpens chains; makes minor repairs to broken chainsaws and makes other minor equipment repairs;
  • Dumps, spreads, and grades gravel on unpaved parking areas, driveways, and walkways; dumps and spreads mulch under play equipment;

Requirements:

  • Executes recruiting plans and programs to identify talent sources within and outside of the school district for the talent acquisition department.  This includes overseeing and/or conducting recruiting plans and interviewing schedules for each open position.
  • Regularly participates in local and national job & career fairs to source talent for vacant positions.
  • Participates in the annual teaching allocation process (i.e. Article 211) to meet the educator needs across all schools and academic departments.  Partners with the Columbus Education Association (CEA) bargaining unit to enable certificated openings to be filled internally.
  • Conducts ongoing process improvement to increase the standardization and effectiveness of recruiting and staffing practices. This includes regularly measuring and tracking recruiting results (i.e. time to fill, EEO/ADA recruiting, vacancy rate, etc.) and periodically presenting this data and assessment of effectiveness to leadership.
  • Partners with the reporting administrator to conduct exit interviews for departing employees.
  • Provides new hire information to internal HR staff to prepare documents for board approval and onboarding of new staff.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work in various computer and technology programs
  • Performs other duties as assigned
