Overview
Position Title: Head Of Sustainability
Company: KFC
Location: Glasgow, UK
Job Description:
You don’t need us to tell you how important sustainability is. You’ve been working in this space for several years and have a track record in embedding responsibility and sustainability into a business’s operations and delivering against a strategy. We are looking for someone to help us to drive this agenda within KFC in the UK & Ireland, and to deliver some real tangible, practical change in our business. The pace of change externally, not to mention the raft of legislation from Westminster, means that this space has never been higher up the agenda of our business, or of greater concern to our customers and stakeholders. But its also a meaty challenge and won’t be easy – we are a huge, complex business with a franchised model, so delivering change takes tenacity and patience.
This is huge opportunity for someone who wants to make an impact and influence at the highest level in KFC, a brand that’s firmly part of UK culture, in a sector that’s at the heart of public policy and media debate. We are looking for a Head of Sustainability who is a passionate about delivering business change, a champion for the importance of sustainable capitalism, but credible and pragmatic enough to understand the challenges facing a business in a highly competitive commercial environment. This isn’t a role for someone who lives in an ivory tower.
Responsibilities:
- Act as the Sustainability team lead ensuring legal compliance and implementing goals and targets
- Be a point of contact between KFC and relevant external stakeholders
- Develop our biodiversity strategy and ensure it lands across the business
- Shape, evolve and deliver the environmental strategy, running the Environment Working Group and reporting into the Responsibility Council
- Lead a small sustainability team (currently one direct report, plans to recruit further), but set goals and actions for multiple functions (e.g. Ops, Marketing, Development) so they have clarity on what our strategy means for them
- Establish our IMS (ISO 14001 and 50001)
- Attend meetings, events and seminars, representing the business externally to build relationships and enhance reputation with a range of stakeholders—including politicians, NGOs, thinktanks, trade associations, etc.— feeding all relevant insight and information back to the business
- Develop policies and standards and work with business stakeholders
- Create operational metrics, track and manage delivery timelines, and communicate programme status to internal stakeholders
- Be a key advisor and stakeholder across all pillars of Sustainability in its widest sense – welfare and sourcing, nutrition, community / social purpose, our people
- Be a champion for Sustainability across the entire business, using your influence to drive change, working across other functions and other markets to share best practice
Requirements:
- Technical knowledge on topics such as packaging, waste, energy efficiency and use of natural resources
- Proficient at managing sustainability reporting to demonstrate progress against KPIs and targets; ideally experience in working with an IMS and having set up an ISO 14001 or 50001)
- Keen interest in sustainability beyond traditional CSR programmes
- Have good subject matter knowledge of sustainability in its broadest sense (not just environmental impacts)
- Knowledgeable about external groups and partners on sustainability
- 8 years+ experience in implementing sustainability programmes an in-house or consultancy role
- Comfortable presenting executive level reports and analysis
About KFC
In 1952 Colonel Harland Sanders opened the first KFC restaurant in Utah. Since then, his perfectly crafted Original Recipe chicken and its secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices has become famous all over the world, and today we have over 900 restaurants across the UK and Ireland.
The Colonel was all about doing things the right way. That means our chicken is delivered fresh from farm to restaurant in 48 hours. It’s prepared carefully by hand in-restaurant by trained cooks, using the very best chicken reared to strict welfare standards. That’s what makes our food so finger lickin’ good.
The right way also means serving fresh proper food, packed with flavour. So we’ve worked hard to make nutritional improvements across our menu so our fans have as much choice as possible, and we’ve committed to removing 20% of calories per serving by 2025.
The Colonel also believed in feeding promise, wherever it’s found. So that’s why we invest heavily in the development and careers of our 24,000 employees – we were the first restaurant to launch an honours degree. And since its 2015 launch, our KFC Foundation has paid out grants totalling £3 million to our charity partners who are passionate about developing and nurturing young people across the country.
