Job Description

The Architecture & Conservation Team works within Parliament’s Design Authority which is part of Strategic Estates, the parliamentary estates department which undertakes major projects. The team acts as “keeper of the fabric” to the seventeen buildings on the Parliamentary Estate (the majority of which are listed) , provides advice and guidance on design, materials and planning to project leaders and consultants, and works with the maintenance teams across both Houses of Parliament. There are currently three architects in the team, together with a Historian and Archivist and two Clerks of Works. With the current increase in major projects, it has become necessary to increase the capacity of the team.

Responsibilities:

• The Architecture & Conservation Team works within Parliament’s Design Authority which is part of Strategic Estates, the parliamentary estates department which undertakes major projects.

Requirements:

• Experience of planning and listed building practice and the roles of Historic England and the local planning authority.
• Good working knowledge of conservation philosophy, techniques and materials.
• Practical IT skills, including capability to apply BIM to historic buildings.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral, with proven ability to influence and persuade using a range of techniques at all levels across a complex organization.
• A creative and original approach to problem solving which accommodates diverse and often conflicting practical and philosophical issues.
• The ability to work as part of a team and to build and maintain effective working relationships with key clients, stakeholders and colleagues at all levels, promoting a culture of diversity and inclusion and supporting others in the delivery of their roles, valuing and respecting everyone.
