Job Description:

Under general supervision, assign, coordinate, supervise and conduct field inspections of new and existing potable water, gas, sewage waste, or venting of noxious gas fumes systems and construction to enforce compliance with applicable plumbing and gas codes.

Responsibilities:

• Supervise assigned personnel. Schedule, assign, guide and check work. Review operational and procedural activities. Prioritize and coordinate unit activities. Appraises employee performance. Provide staff training and development. Enforce personnel rules, regulations, and work standards. Counsels, motivates and maintains harmony. Interview applicants. Recommend hire, termination, transfers, discipline, merit pay or other employee status changes.
• Plan, prioritize, assign day to day work activities to plumbing inspectors. Involves: Ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications and applicable local, state and national codes, regulations and standards governing construction, alteration and repair of water, sewage, wastewater and gas lines. Monitor inspection results are posted. Provide uniform application of plumbing and gas codes and regulations. Provide updated information, interpretation and explanation of plumbing and gas codes to contractors, engineers, architects and other inspectors. Monitor licensed plumbing contractors on major construction projects. Assure construction is being performed by licensed contractors under City issued permits. Investigate and respond to complaints regarding illegal construction, safety, and/or hazardous conditions. Issue and post stop orders, corrective actions or citations depending on the situation. Testify in court as requested by City prosecuting attorney. Review blueprints at office and during onsite inspections. Research and review new or proposed codes, regulations and guidelines.

Requirements:

• Certification by International Code Council (ICC) as a Plumbing Inspector and Plumbing Inspector License from the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners required by time of appointment. ICC certification as a Plumbing or Mechanical Plans Examiner within six (6) months of date of appointment. Texas Class “C” Driver’s License or equivalent from another state.
• A High School diploma or GED, and two (2) years of plumbing or mechanical code enforcement experience.
