Job Description:

The Counselor position at the Houston Health Department – Area Agency on Aging interviews, counsels, screens and assesses clients for social services for older adults who reside in Harris County and as needed make referrals to other social service partners in the City of Houston Metropolitan Area.

Responsibilities:

• Responds to consumers’ questions received over the phone, face-to-face or through mail
• Knowledgeable of community services, supports and eligibility criteria
• Prepares written records of correspondents with consumers and inputs information into the client management system
• Collects data, resources and Medicare information to assist consumers over the phone and face-to-face
• Knowledgeable about Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and Retirement Benefits
• Other duties as assigned by Houston Health Department and Harris County Area Agency on Aging
• Certified Benefits Counselor
• Provides information to consumers who require Medicare counseling, financial and Legal assistance Medicare counseling
• Maintains client records ensuring data is included for effective follow-up and required reports
• Solid background in providing and coordinating services for people with complex problems

• Experience working with federal, state or local governmental entities.
• Must be willing to work extended hours as needed to accommodate case load demands.
• General understanding of federal, state and local rules relating to litigation and appeals.
• Proficiency with the Office 365 suite of programs, including Word, Outlook, Excel and the use of technology in the practice of law.
• Above average academic and professional achievement.
• General understanding of constitutional law.
• Familiarity with Equal Pay Act, Age Discrimination in Employment Act, Americans with
• Disabilities Act, Fair Labor Standards Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, and Uniformed Services
• Employment and Reemployment Rights Act.
