Job Description:
The City of Houston’s Department of Housing and Community Development (HCDD) works to create safe, stable, and complete communities by funding projects related to affordable homes, public facilities, economic development, public services and infrastructure. Partnering with non-profit, governmental, and local entities, HCDD seeks to strengthen Houston’s neighborhoods, provide true housing choice and execute the Mayor’s vision for One Houston with complete communities throughout.
Responsibilities:
- As a member of the senior team, leading HCDD’s efforts to communicate outward and hear back from both the broader community and HCDD clients regarding HCDD’s programs, policies and planning activities.
- Providing leadership and direction for personnel in the areas of performance management, work plan development/work product review, professional development, change management, and coaching/mentorship
- Engaging, energizing, and inspiring personnel in the development, implementation, and execution of policy and communication division functions.
- Employing management and administrative principles and practices, including establishing goals and objectives, planning and organizing work, and developing reporting metrics.
- Analyzing complex operational and administrative problems, evaluating alternatives, and recommending or adopting effective courses of action.
Requirements:
- Overseeing the development of public information, print reports, newsletters, press releases, social media content, marketing and promotional materials, presentations, and website/intranet content; public relations activities that include media, stakeholder, and partnership relations; as well as customer service/call center functions.
- Serving as communications advisor, consulting with executive and operational leadership on the development of communications strategies and informing on the needs and perceptions of external audiences as they relate to or are affected by departmental objectives, priorities, and activities.
- Developing operational approaches to solicit, coordinate and consolidate materials for responses to public/stakeholder feedback on departmental objectives, priorities, and activities.
- Creating opportunities for media coverage to better educate the public and managing communications assets, including current and archival written materials, videos, and photos.
- Evaluating communications strategy performance, seeking out industry best practices, and creating or reviewing metrics and indicators to assess returns on strategies employed.
