Job Description:

Performs a variety of skilled tasks in the operation of medium – heavy duty equipment maintaining city water systems and other Public Works maintenance activities as assigned. Performs operations according to required standards; and performs semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks. Work requires considerable skill in manipulating medium to heavy motor equipment and constant attention to safety of operation in order to prevent accidents. This class differs from Equipment Operator B due to the higher degree of skill required and the greater responsibility for safe and efficient operation and care of complex heavy construction equipment.

Responsibilities:

• Performs routine cleaning, inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
• Sets up and removes barricades, lane cones, and warning signs to channel traffic around work crews and work zone flagging. Assists with clean-up operations at accidents, spills, and other emergency situations.
• Performs skilled and semiskilled construction, maintenance, and labor work such as: digs ditches, patches potholes, loads and unloads material and supplies using power equipment. Performs weed and vegetation control and other general labor work as required.
• Follows Blue Stake laws that govern excavations.
• Operates jackhammers, weed eaters, and other small equipment and tools to maintain water/wastewater systems.
• Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
• Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures; follows safety policies and practices, works in a safe manner, and reports unsafe activity and conditions.
• Completes work orders and responding to customer contacts by making repairs, investigating water-related complaints and tests manholes for gases.
• Provides excellent customer service to all contacts.
• Performs pre and post-trip equipment according to CDL requirements.
• Work requires considerable skill in order to manipulate equipment associated with each assignment, such as backhoes (fine grading), forklifts, trenching machines, dump truck, street sweepers, slurry trucks, front-end loaders, tractors/gannons, truck with a trailer and other related departmental equipment.
• Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.
• Repairs and maintains municipal water/wastewater system transmission mains, distribution lines, pumps, and all related industry items.
• Supervises and leads DOC Inmate Labor as trained and assigned.
• Assists with Blue Stake activities and other divisions and departments in water/utility-related activities.
• Hauls materials and transports vehicles and equipment to job sites.
• May be required to work early mornings, evenings, holidays or weekends as needed.
• Repairs and replaces water meters or registers. Makes emergency repairs and takes necessary steps to restore water service as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Requirements:

• Any combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge and experience to perform the work.
• Based on assignment, may be required to participate and obtain NIMS (National Incident Management System) training certifications.
• Flagger certification within 1 year of hire.
• Graduation from high school diploma or GED equivalent;
• Valid Arizona State operator’s license and if required, Arizona Commercial Driver’s License at a minimum level of Class B or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
• Two (2) years’ experience involving the use of light to medium equipment, one (1) of which must have been related to construction and/or maintenance of pipelines.
