Job Description
This is a standard position description for use in an environmental program in which the application of scientific and technical principles are used.
An employee in this class practices the environmental protection and optimum use of air, land and water resources as well as the management of urban development, which leads to an improvement in the health and well-being of people and their environs.
Responsibilities:
- May testify in Administrative/investigating or court hearing when necessary, relative to environmental violations.
- Drafts preliminary work, plans (a series of steps that must be completed) to ensure compliance with the Federal EPA standards.
- Documents evidence of violations found in the environment, and makes recommendations as to what forms of disciplinary action should be taken.
- Investigates and researches complaints received from the general public and other government agencies primarily on pollution in the environment. Research consists of reviewing books, articles etc., relative to the subject.
- Writes reports of a technical and administrative nature, consisting of data and information on environmental samples. Makes analyses of the data obtained. Submits reports (305B) Water Quality Assessment Report to Congress.
- Works with hazardous substances in cleaning up environmental toxic arid wastes.
- Monitors contracts assigned to various contractors to ensure performance according to specifications (use of correct materials etc.) for the purpose of conducting an adequate study.
- Performs technical review of Environmental Assessment reports, to be able to make a sound judgment concerning environmental impact.
- Performs other related duties as may be required.
- May perform scuba diving activities to test underwater reefs, etc.
- Serves as lead worker in ensuring that work plans are met and completed.
- Makes samples of the beaches, water etc., looking for sources of pollution. These examples are tested, and upon receipt of the results may interpret these results. Makes research design relative to collecting and interpreting statistical data.
Requirements:
- Ph.D. degree in environmental science or related field. OR: M.S. degree in environmental science or related field and two (2) years of experience OR: B.S. degree and five (5) years of experience OR: Environmental Specialist II for two (2) years.
