Position Title: Construction Inspector

Job Description:
Under general supervision, performs paraprofessional civil engineering construction inspection work. Inspects ongoing public capital improvement construction projects for compliance with all building and civil construction codes, City regulations, and construction plans. This is the entry level position for this work class.
Responsibilities:
- Inspects construction projects, which includes streets, alleys, water and sewer lines, irrigation facilities, storm drains, and permit construction in the public right-of-way, for compliance with standard details, specifications, and approved plans;
- Takes samples of various materials tests and/or calls for materials testing as required;
- Responds to citizen complaints and requests for information regarding construction projects;
- Provides information to contractors, owners, or other customers regarding the Construction Code and other regulatory requirements and specifications;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service;
- Performs inspections in accordance with approved plans and all disciplines;
- Monitors Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA);
- Inspects materials, grades, and other work for compliance with contract specifications;
- Conducts utility inspections for new developments;
- Monitors dust control and storm water management procedures;
- Monitors an assigned geographical area to identify construction being performed without a permit and for dangerous structures;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Conducts site inspections and authorizes release of Certificate of Occupancy;
- Verifies barricade set-ups including street, sidewalk, or alley restrictions, in accordance with MUTCD and the City of Phoenix Traffic Barricade Manual;
- Issues notices of violation where unsafe or illegal conditions exist, and conducts follow-up inspections to ensure corrections are made;
- Performs as-built plan review and requires construction corrections to be made when deficiencies are discovered;
- Documents construction project progress;
- Monitors and inspects the construction of City projects with utilities, other departments, contractors, and subcontractors;
Requirements:
- This Position must possess or be able to obtain two (2) separate NICET Level I or higher certifications. Each Certification must be in a different focus area so that 2 of the 4 focus areas are covered. These certifications must be obtained within 12 months from the date of hire.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent and (2) years of experience in building or public works construction; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
