Position Title: Computer Forensic Investigator

Job Description:

The Computer Forensic Investigator performs investigative work in support of prosecution activities of the Criminal District Attorney’s Office. Work involves investigating various parties and analysis of evidentiary documentation and data associated with criminal activities involving the use of computers. Employee is also responsible for preparing and presenting testimony as an expert by contacting and preparing state witnesses for trials, and assisting various law enforcement personnel in matters pertaining to criminal investigations involving computer-related crime. Employee is subject to the usual hazards of investigative law enforcement work.

Responsibilities:

  • Presents general information pertaining to computer crime to non-law enforcement groups, and provides training to law enforcement agencies concerning the technical methods involved in investigating and preserving computer evidence.
  • Interrogates suspects, interviews witnesses, reviews case files, obtains and reviews criminal histories of suspects and other parties, photographs crime scenes, and confers with prosecutors to advise on the availability and quality of evidence to support prosecution of individual suspects.
  • Performs forensic analysis of computers and related storage media using methods and verifiable standards generally accepted by the forensic community.
  • Extracts data, compiles evidence, and forms opinions pertinent to the investigation and prosecution of computer crime cases.
  • Maintains communication with informers and surveillance over known agitators and other suspected law violators.
  • Regular and punctual attendance required.
  • Coordinates preparations for witnesses to testify on behalf of prosecution.
  • Provides technical, logistical, and training support to ensure preservation of volatile computer-related evidence.
  • Advises witnesses of courtroom procedures and terminology, coordinates travel and lodging arrangements and prepares various forms to obtain reimbursement for witnesses’ expenses.
  • Prepares reports for law enforcement agencies of known or suspected criminal activity, as appropriate.
  • Consults with county law enforcement agencies, and assists them in the investigation of computer-related crime, to include preparation and execution of search warrants for computers and related items.
  • Attends court and assists prosecutors with technological support and expert testimony as related to computers.
  • Prepares reports and documentation pertaining to that analysis, and presents expert court testimony and opinions in cases prosecuted by the County.
  • Testifies in an expert capacity concerning computer-related evidence before grand juries or trial courts.
  • Investigates assigned cases which involve the criminal use of computers to identify, apprehend, and prosecute offenders.
  • Coordinates presenting extracted evidence in a viewable format during trial preparation and at trial.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements:

  • Certification as a Peace Officer in the State of Texas required.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license. Must be able to obtain a State of Texas Driver’s license within 90 days.
  • Other certifications and licenses may be required.
  • Associate’s degree in related field required for this position and a minimum five years of experience in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience required.
  • Must be able to pass a State Criminal History background check.
