Position Title: Community Mediation Program Coordinator

Job Description:

This grant-funded part-time position would help create a brand new Community Conflict Resolution and Mediation Program to enable people who are not involved with the criminal legal system to take more control of their safety and well-being and that of their families, roommates, neighbors, friends, and colleagues. This position would establish and train volunteers for a service open to anyone in the community to resolve conflict before they come to the attention of the police or courts.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Victim Services Manager and CJC Director to apply for future funding to make the program financially sustainable over multiple years.
  • Create a mission and vision statement, based on a logic model which includes stakeholders and partners, for this mediation program with Victim Services Manager. This process will center education in conflict mediation as well as provide direct service mediation and providing a neutral safe space for difficult conversations.
  • Serve as primary ambassador of the program in the community and seek out opportunities to present on the program to new communities, especially those in marginalized communities who have been disproportionally affected by crime/harm.
  • Working with the Victim Services Manager, develop the infrastructure of administration of a case from incoming request through evaluation of the services. Including working on DOC database,
  • With assistance of social media intern(s), lead outreach/marketing efforts to introduce the program to partners and prospective stakeholders giving them a clear idea of what services the BCJC is offering.
  • Establish a sustainable program and strategic, operational, three-year plan, for offering mediation to residents of Burlington who request services from the BCJC as well as a Train the Trainer curricula and outreach strategy.
  • Develop and conduct “Train the Trainer” culturally-specific curricula to educate neighborhood citizens, staff of residential complexes, and others with a particular focus on populations targeted by crime and conflict, on applied conflict styles, active listening, non-violent communication, conflict mediation skills, and other skills to help others resolve conflict peacefully.
  • Identify local mediators in the area with relevant skills, credentials, and resources with whom we could contract.
  • Develop tracking and evaluation mechanisms for all required and desired data for the funder and constituents to not only measure activities and outcomes of the program, but to look for opportunities for improvement regarding access, efficacy, inclusion .

Requirements:

  • Regular attendance and availability to respond to emergent and time-sensitive situations are essential to meeting expectations of the job functions.
  • Computer literacy necessary. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and familiarity of restorative practices, with an ability to understand and demonstrate knowledge of victim and community impact around harm.
  • Strong communication skills, including written, phone, public speaking, meeting and training facilitation.
  • High standards of confidentiality, attention to detail, record keeping and follow through required.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, while also working independently as necessary.
  • Bachelor’s Degree and at least three years of experience in mediation, restorative justice, conflict resolution, or related fields. Ideal candidate has experience with program development and working with marginalized populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with people who have experienced trauma, and come from diverse racial, economic, and other backgrounds.
  • Ability to understand and comply with City standards, safety rules and personnel policies.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational, coordination and group leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
  • Ability to serve as an “Ambassador” for the City, carrying out work and interacting with co-workers and the public in respectful professional manner.
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with a wide range of individuals and groups, who may have conflicting interests and opinions.
  • Able to manage and grow programs and meet program requirements, reports and deadlines.
  • Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
