Job Description

The FCDO is now looking to appoint a Chief Economist. This is a unique and exciting role. As Chief Economist you will be the lead economic adviser to the Foreign Secretary on all the UK’s diplomatic and development policy. More broadly you will sit at the heart of the department and provide insightful economic advice to Ministers, senior officials, and Ambassadors on global economic developments of interest to the UK. You will evaluate the economic implications of policy options across the full range of FCDO interests in key areas such as the use of foreign aid, security, the use of sanctions and private sector development. The Chief Economist will be instrumental in ensuring policies and investment decisions are informed by rigorous evidence and provide good value for money.

The Chief Economist will also lead a large team of economists within the FCDO and play a prominent role in leading the profession across government and work to strengthen the use of economic evidence across government.

In addition the Chief Economist oversees the FCDOs evaluation strategy, guidance on the most cost-effective approaches to tackling key challenges (“Best Buys”), and independent review of major investments.

We are seeking an exceptional individual with a track record in international macro, development economics or directly related fields such as trade and growth who brings the gravitas to be a trusted economic advisor to policy makers at the very highest level. Additionally, you will bring the ability to engage and inspire a large community of economists and to make a contribution to the overall leadership of the FCDO as a member of the executive committee. You will also have the ability to collaborate with peers across government both in the UK and internationally.
