Position Title: Chief Scientific Adviser Environment

Job Description

The role is central to the Scottish Government’s work on the environment, agriculture and the wider rural economy, from climate change and biodiversity to food security, from land use to animal health. The post-holder will lead the integration and effective use of scientific evidence in policy across these high-profile areas and will ensure that the science advice and analysis used by Scottish Government is robust, relevant and high quality. The post holder will provide independent challenge to the scientific research being conducted in and for Scottish Government.

Responsibilities:

• Maintain a high standard in approaches to scientific work, its interpretation and use in the provision of scientific advice and challenge.
• Provide assurance that scientific evidence and advice for Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture related policy and decision making is robust, relevant and of high quality.
• Deliver a more strategic approach to science across relevant portfolios and agencies in order to support science investment, maintain relevant national capability in key areas and ensure that science is taken up and used.
• Ensure Ministers and policy officials receive the most up to date evidence on key science issues of the moment.
• Ensure Ministers and policy officials have awareness of the opportunities arising from new scientific and technological developments and are aware of the implications these may have for Scotland and its economy, particularly the rural economy.
