Overview

Position Title: Data Scientist

Company: Bank of England

Location: London, UK

Job Description

This job is in the Applied Data Science and Visualisation (ADSV) team within AA. Our team leads on delivering innovative solutions to policy questions; advising on the efficient use of technology for data science; and developing and operationalising data science techniques for wider use. We work on a variety of pioneering projects, for instance applying text analytics to policymakers’ speeches; using near real-time data from APIs to monitor the economic impact of COVID-19; making 1.5TB of international trade data analytically tractable; and saving years of colleagues’ time through efficient use of analytical tools.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify meaningful sources of data for policymakers, combining and manipulating these into a suitable format for analysis
  • Use analytical tools like R and Python to efficiently retrieve, manipulate and analyse a wide variety of data
  • Detail the techniques and data used in projects so the analysis can be replicated, either directly or for similar projects
  • Communicate results to our stakeholders in a clear, non-technical but sufficiently detailed way
  • Provide technical advice to others in the division and the wider Bank, on areas of own expertise
  • Keep abreast of the latest developments in techniques and technology for data science, and share that knowledge with Bank colleagues
  • Identify and exploit high-value opportunities for innovation

Requirements:

  • At least some experience of computer programming, and an interest in building these skills further
  • Problem-solving capability
  • Passion and perseverance to find data driven solutions for real-life problems
  • Proactive and self-starting
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to clearly explain complex concepts in simple language, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work effectively on multiple projects and respond to competing demands
