Position Title: Executive Editor

Company: BBC

Location: Brighton, UK

Job Description

The Executive Editor will be part of the strategic and creative leadership team of BBC Local Radio, with responsibility for two stations; Radio Kent and Radio Sussex and Surrey.

We want a creative leader who can drive our stations that meet the needs of our existing audience and reach new audiences, by ensuring our content is visible on all platforms.

The last sixteen months have shown us just how important Local Radio is. The impact of COVID has been very different across England and Local Radio has been uniquely placed to tell that story, by offering trusted news and information and explaining what the latest guidance means. It’s connected to communities through Make a Difference, putting those in need of help with those able to offer it. So far almost five million people have contacted Local Radio through Make a Difference and it’s set to become a core BBC brand.

But Local Radio isn’t just about helping people in times of need. We are passionate about where we live. Telling the amazing stories of the people who live there. Our sports coverage is shamelessly partisan as we follow our sporting heroes from grassroots to glory. We also act as a front door for the rest of BBC, finding new talent through initiatives like BBC Introducing, Upload and New Voices.

Aligning to the Local Radio Strategy, you will drive the quality of output, ensuring it informs, educates and entertains the listeners, as well as ensuring it represents fully the communities the stations serve.

Responsibilities:

  • You will have a passion for trends in audio listening and look for ways in which you and your teams can respond on all Platforms.
  • Finally, you will be committed to the importance of Local Radio and be a advocate of the power of the stories that Radio can deliver to audiences.
  • Leading your teams to be creative and imaginative whilst driving a culture of fairness, collaboration and inclusivity.
  • Discovering, coaching and developing on-air and off-air talent and be committed to delivering on the BBC’s
  • Diversity and Inclusion targets.
being agile in delivering change and ensuring your team shares best practice across stations.

Requirements:

  • You will have experience of working in an agile environment, and you will be able to respond to a fast paced, changing organisation.
  • You will be creative, and able to both lead according to strategy, as well as having the scope to collaborate with other creative teams and provide strategic input.
  • You will have excellent people skills with experience of managing, coaching and developing talent in all its guises.
  • You need to demonstrate a good understanding or passion for the audio landscape and the importance of local radio.
  • You will be able to take accountability for the editorial decisions you make, and make swift adjustments to approach where necessary.
