Position Title: Accountant

Job Description:
Under general direction, the Accountant is responsible for performing a wide range of accounting, financial tracking, and maintenance work for the municipal accounting systems, records, and budgets. Current recruitment is for our Engineering Department.
Responsibilities:
- Compiles information and financial data for the creation and delivery of special reports on management issues, cost efficiencies, and revenue-generating concepts.
- Assembles, compiles, and disburses new reconciliations for department accounts on a monthly basis; methodically analyzes and compares costs and expenses to previous months; reconciles account discrepancies while maintaining data integrity and workflow goals.
- Assist with monitoring operating and capital improvement budgets; preparation of reports on budget matters and future budget needs.
- Supervises, monitors, and supports clerical and accounting personnel; verifies P card transactions and provides support for other personnel; performs special projects and assignments as needed.
- Examines, evaluates, and reviews invoices and other purchase orders; ensures proper submission, documentation, and signatures are present; approves all invoices submitted once requirements are met.
- Prepares and presents reports on budget matters, projects future budget needs, and develops manual and computer procedures for recording and storing statistical information.
- Performs extensive accounting tasks, cost analyses, and statistical evaluations for the department assigned; prepares statements and statistical reports, reconciles ledger accounts and bank statements, drafts journal entries, analyzes invoices and receiving reports, prepares audit worksheets, and monitoring expenditures.
- Assists, supports, and participates in year-end closing of books and reconciliation; lists all receivables and outstanding purchase orders; delivers accurate statements for expenses and revenue; maintains the City’s fixed asset database.
- Performs customer service and other duties as assigned.
- Oversees and assists in the management of vehicle inventory records and accounts for fleet vehicle system.
Requirements:
- Advanced bookkeeping and accounting
- A valid State driver’s license is required.
- Basic Statistics and research methods
- Government accounting and budgeting practices
- Personnel supervision, management, and oversight
- Auditing practices
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or closely related field PLUS one (1) year of experience in accounting or budget analysis, preferably in the public sector; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered
